Flying under a maiden or married name
Marriage does not automatically invalidate a passport in your maiden name. If that is the valid passport you will travel with, book the ticket in the name printed on it, even if you use your married name elsewhere. A marriage certificate can explain the change, but do not rely on it to fix a differently named ticket at check-in. To put a married surname on a new passport, HMPO normally asks for your marriage or civil partnership certificate; you do not need a deed poll merely to take your partner’s surname. If applying before the ceremony, check HMPO’s post-dated passport rules and the destination’s visa rules first.
| Your situation | Book the flight in | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Married, still travelling on a valid maiden-name passport | Your maiden name, exactly as printed | Nothing changes until you renew. The booking must match the passport, not the name you now use day to day. |
| New passport already issued in your married name | Your married name, exactly as printed | The old passport is cancelled. Re-apply for any ESTA or visa using the new passport number. |
| Post-dated passport ordered before the wedding | Your married name, for travel after the ceremony only | It cannot be used before the ceremony, and some countries will not issue visas in a post-dated passport. |
| Deed poll signed, passport not yet updated | The name on your current passport | A deed poll does not change an existing passport or booking. Apply for the new passport before booking in the new name. |
| Ticket already booked in a name that differs from the passport | Ask the airline to correct it to the passport name | Do it before check-in opens, confirm any fee, and keep the amended itinerary in writing. |
If the ticket and passport already differ
Contact the airline or booking agent immediately, before check-in opens. Give them the exact spelling shown on the passport and ask whether they will correct the booking, what evidence they want and what it costs. Airline booking name-change fees vary: easyJet, for example, permits limited spelling corrections free but charges for a passenger name change per flight. A change through an online travel agent may need to go through that agent. Get the amended itinerary in writing; a deed poll or marriage certificate does not itself alter the airline’s reservation.
Update your passport before visas or international flights
For a name change outside the usual marriage route, HMPO accepts an unenrolled deed poll, statutory declaration or affidavit, together with proof of previous changes and evidence that you use the new name. GOV.UK provides free wording, so there is no HMPO requirement to buy a £35-plus postal package. An optional instant deed poll PDF from InstantDeedPoll costs £14.99 at the time of checking. It is a downloadable template: print it, sign it in your old and new names before two adult witnesses, and follow HMPO’s instructions for the supporting documents. An unsigned PDF alone is not passport evidence, and the provider cannot guarantee acceptance. Check the evidence required for your circumstances before paying. Disclosure: InstantDeedPoll is run by Elite Digital AI Solutions Ltd, the company that publishes FlightLogic. We do not earn a commission on it, and the free GOV.UK wording above is equally valid.
If time is short, HMPO’s 1 week Fast Track can handle eligible passport name changes, but it requires an appointment, the correct documents and a separate passport fee. It is unavailable for a first adult passport; extra checks can still delay issue. HMPO advises against booking travel until you hold a valid passport, and a replacement will have a new number.
Check visas and passport formatting
Apply for visas or electronic travel authorisations using the passport you will actually travel on. An existing visa in the old passport may become invalid after a name change, so ask the issuing embassy or consulate. For the United States, US Customs and Border Protection requires a new ESTA when you get a new passport or change your name. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets machine-readable passport standards; its formatting can remove punctuation or shorten long names. Compare the booking with the passport’s printed name and ask the airline how it handles any formatting difference. Do not guess at check-in.
