Do wheels and handles count towards cabin bag dimensions?
Yes. Airlines measure the whole bag — wheels, handles, side pockets and all — and gate sizers are built to the published limit with no margin. A bag marketed as "55 cm" can easily measure 57–58 cm once wheels are included, so always measure the packed bag end to end before relying on this checker.
What happens if my bag is slightly over the limit?
You may be asked to place it in the sizer at the gate; if it does not fit, the airline will check it into the hold and charge its most expensive airport rate. On Ryanair and easyJet that gate fee is typically far higher than the online bag price would have been. Soft-sided bags that are 1–2 cm over often squish into sizers; rigid cases do not.
Which airlines have no cabin bag weight limit?
Delta, United, American, JetBlue and Air Canada publish no cabin bag weight limit, and Ryanair’s free underseat bag has none either. Everywhere else the limit ranges from 7 kg (Qatar, Emirates, Cathay, Qantas) up to 23 kg (British Airways). Even where no limit is published, you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker unaided.
Can I take a second small bag as well as my cabin bag?
Most full-service airlines allow a small personal item — a handbag or laptop bag — alongside the main cabin bag; British Airways, the US carriers, ANA, JAL, Cathay Pacific and Air France-KLM all do. Ryanair’s free allowance is only the small underseat bag itself, and some Basic fares restrict the overhead cabin bag, so check your fare brand as well as the airline.
