Aviation jargon A–Z

The language of flying itself — what the crew, the controllers and the departure boards are actually saying, and where you'll encounter each term as a passenger.

A

Airside

The secure area of an airport beyond security and passport control — gates, lounges, duty-free shops, and the aprons where aircraft park. Everything before security is "landside". You'll hear it in announcements when, for example, a passenger is paged to return to a security checkpoint airside.

Angle of attack

The angle between a wing's chord line and the oncoming airflow — not the same as the aircraft's pitch. Increasing the angle of attack generates more lift up to a critical point; beyond it, airflow separates from the wing and the aircraft stalls. Pilots manage it constantly, especially at low speeds during takeoff and landing.

Apron (ramp)

The paved area where aircraft park, load, refuel and board — called the "ramp" in North America. It's not a taxiway or runway: aprons are for parked and manoeuvring-under-power aircraft at very low speed. Ground crew you see marshalling aircraft and loading bags work on the apron.

APU (auxiliary power unit)

A small turbine engine, usually in the tail cone, that provides electrical power and air conditioning while the main engines are off, and can start the main engines. It's the hum you hear at the gate, and the reason the lights flicker for a second when the aircraft switches from ground or APU power to engine power after pushback.

B

Bird strike

A collision between an aircraft and one or more birds, most likely during takeoff, landing or low-altitude flight. Modern jet engines are certified to ingest birds of specified sizes and keep working, and airports run active bird-control programmes, which is why strikes are common but serious outcomes are rare.

Black box (CVR/FDR)

The collective name for an aircraft's two crash-survivable recorders: the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which captures crew audio, and the flight data recorder (FDR), which logs hundreds of aircraft parameters. Despite the name they are painted bright orange to help recovery teams find them after an accident.

Block time

The scheduled time from when an aircraft leaves the gate (brakes off, blocks removed from the wheels) to when it parks at the destination gate — taxi out, flight, and taxi in all included. It's why your "6-hour flight" has a scheduled duration of 7 hours 30, and why airlines can arrive "on time" despite airborne delays.

C

Clear-air turbulence

Turbulence encountered in cloudless sky, usually near the jet stream or where fast and slow air masses shear past each other at high altitude. Because there are no clouds to warn pilots or show on weather radar, it can arrive without notice — the main reason crews advise keeping your seatbelt loosely fastened whenever you're seated.

Coffin corner

The narrow band of altitude at which a high-flying jet's low-speed stall speed and high-speed (Mach) buffet limit nearly converge — fly slightly too slow or too fast and the aircraft departs controlled flight. Despite the grim nickname, cruise flight sits comfortably inside the safe margin, and autopilots enforce it.

Contrails

The white streaks behind high-flying aircraft — condensation trails formed when hot, moist engine exhaust mixes with very cold air at altitude, freezing water vapour into ice crystals. Whether they appear, and how long they last, depends on atmospheric humidity, so their presence tells you about the air up there rather than the aircraft.

Crew resource management (CRM)

The training discipline that teaches pilots and cabin crew to work as a team: communicating openly, cross-checking each other's decisions, and challenging a senior colleague's mistake without hierarchy getting in the way. Developed after 1970s accidents caused by human rather than mechanical failure, it's credited with transforming airline safety.

Crosswind

Wind blowing across the runway rather than along it, pushing the aircraft sideways during takeoff and landing. Pilots counter it by angling the nose into the wind (a "crab") or lowering a wing; every aircraft type has a maximum demonstrated crosswind limit, and strong crosswinds can close runways or force diversions.

D

De-icing

Spraying heated fluid (usually a glycol mix) onto the aircraft to remove ice, snow or frost from the wings and control surfaces before takeoff, followed by anti-icing fluid that delays re-accumulation. Even a thin layer of frost disrupts airflow over the wing and degrades lift, so departure waits for the spray in winter.

Deadhead

A pilot or cabin crew member travelling as a passenger — in uniform or not — to position for a later duty, not to work the flight they're on. A deadheading crew member occupies a normal seat, and you'll sometimes hear crew greet colleagues boarding this way. It's routine rostering, not a perk or a standby freebie.

Downwind leg

The portion of a rectangular airport traffic circuit flown parallel to the runway in the opposite direction to landing — aircraft fly downwind, turn "base", then turn onto final approach. If your arrival seems to fly away from or past the airport before lining up, you're experiencing the circuit or vectored equivalent.

Duty time

The regulated limit on how long pilots and cabin crew can be on duty, set by national aviation authorities to manage fatigue. When a crew "goes out of hours", the flight legally cannot depart with them — a common reason late-evening delays turn into cancellations even when the aircraft and weather are fine.

E

ETOPS

Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards — the certification regime that lets twin-engine aircraft fly routes more than 60 minutes' flying time from a suitable diversion airport, across oceans and remote regions. Each aircraft/engine combination earns an ETOPS rating (120, 180, 330 minutes and beyond) based on demonstrated reliability.

F

FBO (fixed-base operator)

A private terminal and service provider for business and general aviation — fuelling, hangars, lounges and handling for private jets and their passengers. If you charter a private flight, you'll bypass the main terminal entirely and use an FBO, often driving up to the aircraft steps.

Ferry flight

A flight flown without passengers or cargo purely to move the aircraft itself — returning it to base, delivering it to a customer, or taking it to maintenance. Ferry flights explain otherwise odd one-way aircraft movements that appear on flight-tracking apps with no bookable seats.

Fifth freedom

The right, granted between pairs of countries, for an airline to carry paying passengers between two foreign states as part of a service continuing to or from its home country — for example, a Gulf carrier selling seats between two European cities. Fifth-freedom flights can be unusually good value and often use long-haul aircraft on short hops.

Final approach

The last straight segment of the landing, with the aircraft aligned with the runway centreline, configured with gear and flaps down, descending toward the threshold. On most arrivals it lasts a few minutes; "established on final" in a pilot announcement means landing is genuinely imminent.

Flaps and slats

Hinged panels on the trailing edge (flaps) and leading edge (slats) of the wing that extend for takeoff and landing, increasing wing area and curvature so the wing keeps generating lift at low speeds. The whirring sound after takeoff and before landing is them retracting or deploying — you can watch them move from a window seat over the wing.

Flight level

An altitude expressed in hundreds of feet above a standard pressure setting, used above the transition altitude (18,000 ft in the US, lower in much of Europe). "Flight level three-six-zero" means roughly 36,000 ft. Using a shared pressure reference keeps vertical separation between high-flying aircraft consistent regardless of local weather pressure.

Fuel dump

Jettisoning fuel in flight to bring an aircraft down to its maximum landing weight before an unplanned early landing — a diversion for a medical emergency, for example. Only some aircraft types can dump fuel (many, like the 737 and A320 families, land overweight or circle to burn it instead), and dumping is done at altitude so the fuel vapour disperses.

G

Gate vs stand

The gate is the numbered passenger waiting area and door inside the terminal; the stand is the aircraft parking position outside it. One stand may be served by more than one gate, and remote stands have no gate at all — you're bussed to them. A "gate change" announcement usually means the aircraft's stand has moved.

General aviation

All civil flying that isn't airline or military: private light aircraft, flight training, air taxis, crop spraying, business aviation. GA typically uses smaller airfields and the general-aviation aprons of big airports, and it's what you're looking at when small propeller planes share the sky with airliners.

Go-around

An aborted landing: the pilots apply full power, retract flaps partway, climb away and rejoin the circuit for another approach. Triggers include an unstable approach, traffic still on the runway, or a sudden wind change. It feels dramatic from the cabin but is a routine, trained manoeuvre — the safe option, not an emergency.

GPWS

Ground Proximity Warning System — the automated system that compares the aircraft's position and configuration with terrain and radio altitude, calling out warnings like "TERRAIN, PULL UP" or "SINK RATE" if controlled flight toward the ground is detected. The enhanced version (EGPWS) adds a worldwide terrain database. Passengers never hear it; it's saved many flights.

H

Heavy (callsign suffix)

A word air traffic control appends to the callsign of large, high-weight aircraft — typically widebodies — to remind everyone they generate dangerous wake turbulence, e.g. "Speedbird one-two heavy". It's why following aircraft are given extra spacing behind an A380 or 777, and why you'll sometimes wait at the hold after one departs.

Holding pattern

A published racetrack-shaped circuit where aircraft fly repeated loops at a fix, waiting their turn to land when an airport is congested, weather-affected or briefly closed. Each loop at busy UK airports takes around four minutes. "We've been given a hold" in a pilot announcement means circling, not a problem with the aircraft.

Hub-and-spoke

A network model where an airline funnels passengers from many smaller cities (spokes) through one big hub airport to connect them onward — you fly Manchester–Heathrow–Singapore rather than Manchester–Singapore direct. The alternative is point-to-point flying. Hubs let airlines serve city pairs that could never fill a direct flight.

I

IFR (instrument flight rules)

The regulatory framework under which aircraft fly by reference to instruments and air traffic control clearances rather than visual cues — mandatory for airlines and for flight in cloud or controlled airspace. Contrast with VFR. Every commercial passenger flight operates IFR, in sunshine or in fog.

ILS (instrument landing system)

A precision radio aid that beams two signals up the approach path — a localiser for left-right guidance and a glideslope for the descent angle — letting aircraft land accurately in low cloud and poor visibility. "Established on the ILS" means the aircraft is locked onto those beams for the final descent to the runway.

J

Jet bridge

The enclosed, extendable walkway connecting the terminal gate to the aircraft door — also called an airbridge or jetway. A "no jet bridge" arrival means stairs and possibly a bus to the terminal, common with low-cost carriers and remote stands where airlines save on airport handling charges.

Jet stream

A fast, narrow river of wind at high altitude — often exceeding 100 knots near the tropopause — caused by temperature contrasts between air masses. Airlines ride it eastbound to cut flight time and fuel burn, and avoid it westbound; it's why London–New York is usually around an hour longer than New York–London. It's also a source of clear-air turbulence at its edges.

Jump seat

A fold-down seat in the cockpit or at a cabin crew station, used by off-duty crew travelling for work, trainees, or authorised personnel. Cabin crew occupy jump seats for takeoff and landing — facing backwards at the exits — which is why they abandon the passenger seats during those phases.

L

Landside

The public, non-secure area of an airport: check-in halls, arrivals, cafés and car parks, before security control. Everything beyond security is airside. If an airline texts that your gate "opens" at a certain time, it's telling you when to leave landside and clear security.

M

Mach number

Speed expressed as a fraction of the local speed of sound — Mach 0.85 is 85% of it. Because the speed of sound falls with temperature, Mach is the meaningful measure at high altitude: airliners cruise at roughly Mach 0.78–0.85, and exceeding a type's maximum Mach risks compressibility buffet, not just a speeding ticket.

Mayday vs pan-pan

The two international urgency calls. "Mayday" (from the French m'aider, said three times) declares a distress situation — grave, imminent danger requiring immediate assistance. "Pan-pan" signals urgency without immediate danger — a medical issue or a single-engine problem on a twin that can still fly. Hearing either over the radio prioritises that flight above all others.

MEL (minimum equipment list)

A regulator-approved document listing which aircraft systems may be inoperative, for how long, and under what conditions, while the aircraft still flies legally — a galley oven or one of several anti-skid channels, for example. A departure delayed for "a technical check" often means engineers are consulting the MEL to decide whether the fault can be deferred.

METAR

A standardised coded weather observation issued by an airport, typically every 30 minutes, reporting wind, visibility, cloud, temperature and pressure. Pilots and dispatchers read METARs for departure, destination and alternate airports; the terse code (e.g. "EGLL 311250Z 29015KT 9999 SCT020") is why weather apps exist.

MTOW (maximum takeoff weight)

The heaviest weight at which an aircraft is certified to take off, including the aircraft itself, fuel, passengers, bags and cargo. On long sectors with full payload, dispatchers sometimes trade fuel against payload — leaving bags or cargo behind — to stay under MTOW, which is why overbooked cargo occasionally bumps checked luggage.

N

Narrowbody

An airliner with a single aisle — the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families and their derivatives — typically seating 100–240 passengers. Narrowbodies dominate short-haul and are increasingly used on long, thin routes. From the terminal, one aisle and smaller engines are the tells.

NOTAM

Notice to Airmen (recently restyled "Notice to Air Missions") — an official bulletin alerting pilots to temporary hazards or changes: a closed runway, an unserviceable navigation aid, crane operations near an approach path. Flight crews review relevant NOTAMs before every departure; they're why a favourite runway might be out of use for a week.

P

Payload

The revenue-earning weight an aircraft carries: passengers, baggage, cargo and mail. Payload plus fuel plus the aircraft's empty weight must stay within certified limits, so on very long or hot-and-high routes payload can be capped — the reason some flights block off seats or leave cargo behind in extreme heat.

Pitch

Rotation of the aircraft around its lateral (wing-to-wing) axis — nose up or nose down, controlled by the elevators on the tail. Pitch, roll and yaw are the three axes of aircraft movement; the gentle nose-up sensation at rotation on takeoff is a deliberate pitch input by the flying pilot.

Point-to-point

A network model where aircraft fly directly between city pairs without funnelling passengers through a hub — the classic low-cost-carrier approach, like easyJet or Ryanair. It avoids connection risk and hub congestion, but only works on routes with enough local demand to fill the plane at both ends.

Pushback

The ground tug pushing the aircraft backwards away from the stand — airliners can't reverse safely under their own power at the gate. Engine start often happens during pushback, which is why you hear the engines spool up while the aircraft is moving backwards, and why "we're waiting for a tug" delays departures.

R

Ram air turbine (RAT)

A small propeller-driven generator that deploys from the fuselage or wing as a last-resort power source if main and auxiliary power are lost in flight, using the airflow to drive essential hydraulics and electrics. Passengers will (almost) never see one out — its deployment is a sign of a serious but trained-for emergency.

Red-eye

An overnight flight that departs late evening and arrives early morning, too short for a proper night's sleep — named for tired, red eyes on arrival. UK travellers meet them mostly on eastbound long-haul returns (New York–London, the Gulf, the Far East), where the short night and time change combine to produce the effect.

Repositioning

Moving an aircraft or crew to where they're next needed — flying an empty aircraft to an airport where a schedule begins, or rostering crew to a different base. When a delay is blamed on "the aircraft arriving late from elsewhere", that's a repositioning knock-on: your plane was out of position from an earlier disruption.

Roll

Rotation of the aircraft around its longitudinal (nose-to-tail) axis — one wing rising while the other drops — controlled by the ailerons. Roll is how aircraft turn: the pilot banks into the turn and lift tilts the aircraft around the corner. The gentle wing-dipping you feel in a turn is commanded roll.

Rotation

The moment on takeoff when the pilot pulls the control column back, raising the nose so the wings' increasing angle of attack lifts the aircraft off the runway. It happens at the calculated rotation speed (VR), and the unmistakable nose-up, rumble-stopping sensation is the aircraft transitioning from road vehicle to aircraft.

V-speeds (V1, VR, V2) →
RVSM

Reduced Vertical Separation Minima — the rule set allowing suitably equipped and certified aircraft to fly with 1,000 ft of vertical separation between flight levels 290 and 410, instead of 2,000 ft. It roughly doubles the number of cruise levels available on busy airways, which is why high-altitude jets can stack so closely overhead.

S

Seniority bidding

The system by which pilots and cabin crew express preferences for routes, aircraft types, days off and seat (captain vs first officer), awarded strictly in order of length of service. Seniority governs nearly everything in an airline crew's working life, which is why crew rarely move between airlines — they'd start at the bottom of the list.

Slot (airport slot)

A timed permission to take off or land at a congested, coordinated airport on a specific date and time. Slots at Heathrow are the classic example: they're allocated to airlines seasonally under "use it or lose it" rules, can trade for enormous sums, and effectively cap how many flights an airport can handle.

Slot-controlled airport

An airport where demand exceeds runway or terminal capacity, so movements are rationed through allocated slots — Heathrow, Gatwick at peak times, and most major global hubs. For passengers it means schedules built around slot times, and delays that cascade because an aircraft missing its slot may wait hours for another.

Spoilers

Panels on the upper wing that rise to "spoil" lift and add drag — used in flight to steepen descents or assist roll, and deployed fully on touchdown to dump lift and press the wheels onto the runway for braking. The row of panels popping up on the wing the instant you land is the spoilers doing their job.

Squawk code

The four-digit octal code a pilot dials into the transponder so radar screens identify and track that flight. Three codes are reserved and never assigned routinely: 7500 (unlawful interference/hijack), 7600 (radio failure), and 7700 (general emergency) — squawking any of them alerts controllers immediately, no radio call needed.

Stall

The wing exceeding its critical angle of attack so that airflow separates from the upper surface and lift collapses — an aerodynamic condition, not an engine failure as films suggest. A stall can occur at any speed or attitude if the angle is too great; airliners are flown with wide margins from it, and stall warnings guard the approach.

Sterile area

In airport usage, the security-screened zone of the terminal where everyone and everything has been checked — essentially the airside departure area. (In cockpit usage, "sterile flight deck" means something different: no non-essential conversation below 10,000 ft.) You'll see the airport sense on US signage and in security rules.

T

TAF

Terminal Aerodrome Forecast — a coded forecast of the weather expected at and around an airport over roughly the next 24–30 hours, issued several times daily. Dispatchers and pilots use TAFs to plan fuel and choose alternate airports; a forecast of fog or strong crosswinds in the TAF is why extra fuel goes on before you board.

Taxiway vs runway

Runways are the long strips for takeoff and landing, marked in white with designator numbers; taxiways are the roads connecting them to the apron, marked in yellow with letter names. Aircraft may spend longer taxiing than flying on short hops — Heathrow and JFK taxi times of 20 minutes are normal at peak.

TCAS

Traffic Collision Avoidance System — an independent onboard system that interrogates nearby transponders, displays surrounding traffic, and if a collision threatens, issues a "resolution advisory" commanding one aircraft to climb and the other to descend. TCAS works even if air traffic control misses a conflict; pilots follow its commands over ATC's.

Thrust reversal

Redirecting engine thrust forward after touchdown to help slow the aircraft — on turbofans, blocker doors or cascades deflect fan air ahead of the engine. The roaring surge you hear seconds after landing, felt as firm deceleration, is reverse thrust; wheel brakes and spoilers do the rest of the stopping work.

Transponder

The radio that automatically replies to radar interrogation with the aircraft's squawk code and altitude, so air traffic control screens show each flight's identity and level. Modern "Mode S" transponders also broadcast position for ADS-B tracking — the same data flight-tracking apps republish to your phone.

Trim

Small aerodynamic adjustments (via trim tabs or movable stabilisers) that relieve the control forces needed to hold a given attitude, so the aircraft flies "hands off" at the desired pitch. Pilots re-trim after every change of speed or configuration; if the nose seems to hold itself up in a climb, that's trim at work.

Tropopause

The boundary between the turbulent lower atmosphere (troposphere) and the stable stratosphere above, at roughly 30,000–40,000 ft over the UK — varying with latitude and season. Airliners cruise at or just above it because the air is smooth and cold; the jet stream meanders along it, which is why it matters for turbulence.

Turnaround

Everything that happens to an aircraft between arriving at a stand and departing again: disembarking, cleaning, catering, refuelling, baggage reloading, boarding and pushback. Low-cost airlines target 25–40 minutes; a long-haul widebody may need two hours. Tight turnarounds are why one late inbound leg can delay your whole day.

A widebody airliner cabin layout with two aisles and typically seven to ten seats across — the A330, A350, A380, 747, 767, 777 and 787. Two aisles mean faster boarding and more choice of non-middle seats; if your booking shows a 3-4-3 or 2-4-2 seat map, you're on a twin-aisle aircraft.

V

V-speeds (V1, VR, V2)

The calculated decision speeds for every takeoff. V1 is the go/no-go speed — below it a rejected takeoff stops on the runway, above it the aircraft must fly even with an engine failure. VR is rotation speed, when the nose comes up. V2 is the safe climb speed with one engine out. Crews call them aloud on every departure.

VFR (visual flight rules)

The framework under which pilots navigate and avoid other traffic by looking out of the window, permitted only in adequate visibility and cloud clearance. Mainly used by light aircraft and flight training; airlines fly IFR on virtually every service, but VFR traffic is what your seatmate photographs from the window at small airfields.

Visual approach

A landing flown by reference to the runway in sight rather than instrument guidance, often offered in good weather to shorten the track miles and save time. If your pilot announces "a visual approach today" and the aircraft turns in tighter or later than usual, that's why — it's a normal, efficient clearance.

W

Wake turbulence

The twin horizontal vortices spinning off a generating aircraft's wingtips — strongest when it's heavy, slow and clean-configured — that can violently roll a following aircraft. Air traffic control applies time and distance spacing behind "heavy" aircraft, which is why departures queue behind an A380 and arrivals are spaced out on approach.

Widebody

An airliner with a fuselage wide enough for two passenger aisles — A330, A350, A380, 747, 767, 777, 787 — used mainly on long-haul and high-density routes. From the terminal the sheer fuselage girth, and usually two or more sets of cabin doors and big twin engines, give it away.

Windshear

A sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance, most dangerous at low altitude where it can abruptly add or rob the aircraft of airspeed and lift near the ground. Microbursts under thunderstorms are the extreme case; modern aircraft carry predictive windshear warning systems, and pilots will go around at the first alert.

Y

Yaw

Rotation of the aircraft around its vertical axis — the nose swinging left or right — controlled by the rudder. In normal flight yaw is subtle: pilots use rudder to coordinate turns and to counteract asymmetric thrust or crosswind on landing. The sideways slide-and-straighten just before a crosswind touchdown is a yaw correction.
