Every runway number is simply its magnetic bearing with the last digit dropped. Numbers are painted at each threshold in characters large enough to read on final approach, and pilots confirm the runway in their clearance against both the number and the airport chart. When magnetic north slowly drifts over decades, airports occasionally renumber: the runway hasn't moved, but its magnetic heading has rounded to a new value.

At airports with parallel runways pointing the same way, letters separate them: L for left, R for right, and C for centre where three exist. Heathrow's two runways give four designators — 09L/27R and 09R/27L — and the crew's landing clearance specifies exactly which. Los Angeles, with four parallels, uses 24L/24R and 25L/25R: same direction, different numbers, to keep all four uniquely identified.

The letters describe position from the pilot's perspective on approach. A "sidestep" clearance — being moved from, say, 27R to 27L late in the approach to keep the arrival flow moving — is a routine visual manoeuvre at busy airports, and if your aircraft seems to drift sideways just before touchdown at a big hub, that's often why.

Airports therefore switch the "runway in use" as the wind shifts — and because a given strip is used in both directions, choosing a direction means choosing a runway number. There are hard limits. Every aircraft type has a maximum demonstrated crosswind component, and tailwind limits are far lower — typically 10–15 knots. When wind exceeds what the available runway direction allows, flights delay, divert, or wait for the wind to change. Crosswind landings, where you'll see airliners arrive angled ("crabbing") into the wind before straightening at the last moment, are a trained, everyday technique.

Next time you land, watch the signage past the window: the yellow-on-black location signs and black-on-yellow direction signs are the same ones the crew is following on their taxi chart. The runway number you just landed on, minus or plus 18, is the direction you'd have departed had the wind blown the other way.
