Runway numbers explained: what 09L and 27R actually mean

When magnetic north slowly drifts over decades, airports occasionally renumber: the runway hasn't moved, but its magnetic heading has rounded to a new value.

Airports have renumbered runways several times over the decades for exactly this reason, with charts and signage updated together.
