Hotel Indigo is the Bund option for people who want river light and design detail without paying Fairmont Peace landmark money. The South Bund setting near the old Shiliupu docks is slightly removed from the densest Nanjing Road crowds, which is either a feature (quieter nights) or a bug (longer walk to the classic promenade midpoint).

At 184 rooms it behaves like a boutique: staff remember faces, the pool is a highlight, and CHAR’s rooftop is the in-house nightlife. It will not swallow a 400-person conference the way Shangri-La can.

Getting there from PVG and SHA

Door-to-door Didi from PVG is the low-friction choice with luggage — budget 45–60 minutes. Rail works (Maglev + Line 2) but the last hop to the South Bund is less straightforward than for Nanjing Road hotels, so many guests taxi the final stretch.

From Hongqiao, ride Metro toward the old-city / People’s Square corridor and taxi south along the river. Late-night arrivals should skip multi-leg rail.

Shanghai’s Bund is a long waterfront, not a single corner. Indigo sits toward the southern end — closer to the old docks and Yu Garden approaches, further from the Peace Hotel’s Nanjing Road junction. You still get Lujiazui views across the water; you walk or taxi further for the densest promenade photo scrum.

That trade is why rates often undercut the northern icons. If your mental image of Shanghai is specifically the Peace Hotel corner, book Fairmont Peace. If you want river drama plus boutique design, Indigo fits.

Rooms, pool and CHAR rooftop

Rooms lean colourful and local-referenced — Shikumen brick textures, river-inspired bathrooms, and a real spread between city and river aspects. The indoor pool with water outlook is a genuine rainy-day win.

CHAR Bar & Grill on the upper floors is the social heart: book sunset slots if you care about a table by the glass. Quay covers more casual café meals downstairs.

Eating around the South Bund and Yu Garden

Between hotel restaurants and Yu Garden’s snack streets you can cover Shanghainese classics without a long commute. Walking north along the Bund opens more formal riverside dining; crossing to Pudong is optional rather than required.

For a dumpling-focused day, start at Yu Garden mid-morning, return to the pool mid-afternoon, then CHAR after dark — a tidy South Bund loop.
